Memorial Day (1895)

Memorial Day is on Monday, and we hope you’ll join us in remembering the men and women who have served in our town’s history. Below are images of the Program for the Dedication of the Soldiers’ Monument in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The ceremony, which took place on May 30, 1895, included many events which are seen at modern Memorial Day services: local choirs sang “America” and other patriotic songs. There were readings of historic speeches in our nation’s history. The Soldiers’ Monument was funded and put up by the Ladies’ Relief Corps in honor of soldiers who fought and died in the Civil War. In the spirit of this statue, let us remember the brave soldiers who fought in past and current conflicts.
