Teacher Registry 1917-1918
Continuing with our theme of West Boylston’s schools in the past century, let’s look at some teachers who educated the town’s bright young minds. The picture below is the Register of Teachers for the 1917-1918 school year, taken from the 1917 annual school report. Listed are the teachers’ names, where they attended college, their salary, and how long they have worked at that school.
Note that there are only three teachers at the High School. The principal taught classes in addition to working as an administrator. The primary and intermediate schools have even fewer teachers than the high school, with most having a single teacher listed. Most of the schools the teachers attended are listed as “Normal” Schools. These schools specifically aimed to train teachers. Today, these Normal Schools have reformed into Massachusetts’ State Universities.
